December 31st is one of the deadliest nights on California roads. New Year’s Day sees drunk driving-related deaths spike 89% above normal levels, with fatal crashes involving alcohol surging 136% in the overnight hours compared to the previous four weeks. Recognizing this alarming reality, Setareh Law, APLC Personal Injury & Accident Lawyers launched a proactive safety initiative to help prevent drunk driving crashes during the 2024-2025 New Year’s Eve celebrations.
We introduced our Free Uber Ride campaign to provide Californians with a safe transportation alternative during one of the most dangerous nights of the year. The program offered complimentary Uber vouchers to help ensure partygoers could celebrate responsibly without risking lives by driving under the influence. Our goal was simple: keep our communities safe by removing barriers to making the right choice.
Thousands Register for Free Rides and Embrace Safety on New Year’s Eve
The Free Uber Ride program struck a chord with California communities. More than 4,500 people signed up to request vouchers, demonstrating the clear need for accessible transportation alternatives on New Year’s Eve. The response far exceeded our initial expectations, showing just how many people want to celebrate responsibly but need support in doing so.
Due to the extraordinary demand, we more than doubled our original plans. Instead of our initial distribution target, we ultimately provided 700 Uber vouchers to Californians across the state. This expansion ensured we could meet the overwhelming community interest while maximizing our impact on road safety during the holiday. Participants received their vouchers ahead of the holiday, giving them peace of mind and a concrete plan for getting home safely after their celebrations.
Amplifying the Safety Message Across California with Widespread Media Recognition
Our commitment to preventing drunk driving accidents generated significant attention across California media outlets. The campaign was featured in six television segments on major networks, including NBC LA, NBC Bay Area, NBC San Diego, and KTLA. These broadcasts reached millions of viewers throughout the state, amplifying our safety message during the critical holiday period.
In total, the Free Uber Ride initiative received 28 media placements across media outlets like Yahoo News, 23ABC News, and MSN. This coverage extended far beyond promoting our voucher program. It created widespread public awareness about the dangers of drunk driving on New Year’s Eve and encouraged Californians statewide to think ahead about safe transportation options, whether through our program or their own planning.
Why Safe Transportation Alternatives Help Prevent Tragedy on California Roads
During the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period, approximately 40% of traffic fatalities involve drunk drivers, compared to 28% earlier in December, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The concentration of celebrations into a single night means everyone tries to get home at roughly the same time, with many drivers well over the legal limit. As car accident attorneys based in Beverly Hills, we see firsthand the devastating aftermath of drunk driving crashes. These preventable tragedies leave families mourning loved ones, victims facing lifelong disabilities, and communities bearing the cost of choices made in mere seconds. By providing accessible transportation alternatives and raising awareness, community-focused prevention efforts can save lives before legal services are ever needed.
